This fall, we’ll begin a new series through the book of 1 Peter. But this week, we pause for a stand-alone sermon on the vision of the church—not merely Isaiah Church, but the capital-C Church of Jesus Christ. Before considering what the church is called to do, we must first return to why the church exists.
Religious affiliation has steadily declined for decades, but humanity’s religious impulses have not disappeared. Our need for community, purpose, transformation, and transcendence is now being sought in other institutions and experiences, but they not filling the spiritual void of the human heart. In Acts 2:42–47, we are given a compelling picture of the church at its best—and a vision worth pursuing together.
