"You only live once" went away faster than it came. While it quickly became an annoying and overused phrase, the spirit of YOLO lingers. Why did the trend catch fire and resonate so deeply? At its core, the idea tapped into our fear of missing out, a nagging feeling of nihilism and despair, and a sense that this life is as good as it gets.
Further, trying to reframe "you only live once" as a call to a life of exhilaration and risk-taking only serves to cover our dread of the reality of death and what lies beyond, but as we examine YOLO, we quickly realize why it is so flat and depressing as a philosophy. However, the Apostle Paul understands "you only live once" in a much different light - rather than trying to squeeze every ounce of diminishing enjoyment out of this present life, he describes a purpose and motivation that will carry us beyond it.
