How to Sleep When Your Life Is a Mess

Psalm 3 meets David in one of the darkest moments of his life. His own son has turned against him, his kingdom is unraveling, and the painful consequences of his sin are pressing in on every side. Yet in this first lament of the Psalter, David shows us what faith looks like when life gives us every reason to be restless.

David does not pretend his troubles are small. He names his enemies, his fears, and the voices that mock his hope in God. But he also remembers what is more true: the Lord is his shield, his glory, and the lifter of his head. His peace does not come from immediate escape, but from deep trust in the God who hears and sustains him.

That is why David can lie down and sleep. Psalm 3 teaches us that real rest is not found in a trouble-free life, but in the saving care of the Lord. Ultimately, this rest is secured in Christ, who bore our unrest, reconciled us to God, and now invites anxious souls to trust, to pray, and to sleep because salvation belongs to the Lord.
